National Night Out: Come One come all - MRA will hold a big National Night Out party at Hoover Park on August 5th from 5PM. This will be a dessert potluck, so please bring something to share...or just come. You can also bring a picnic *+& enjoy the new picnic tables/BBQ. We expect visitors from Fire, Police and city officials! Music too!
"National Night Out is a nationwide annual event designed to strengthen neighborhood spirit and unity, raise crime prevention awareness and build a stronger partnership between the City and the Community at every level. More than 35 million people across the nation are expected to participate. Neighborhoods will be hosting a variety of events ranging from small potlucks and BBQ's, to large block parties. Hosting a National Night Out party is a simple way for people to meet one another, have fun and explore how they might work together to improve the safety and quality of their neighborhood.
The City of Palo Alto encourages neighborhoods to organize Block Parties to promote neighborhood unity. Registered (free) groups will be eligible for a visit by groups of City of Palo Alto elected officials and employees, including police and fire department staff. The deadline to register is Friday July 25. The earlier you register early, the greater the likelihood of receiving a visit.

MIDTOWN GENERAL MEETING AUGUST 19: The county plans major updates to Oregon Expressway and side streets. The county has had a few community meetings on this. MRA plans to have an informational session on August 17th before the matter goes to the City Planning and Transportation Commission. Please note the county website for the project and contains the details. The county has extended its deadline for comments until July 19th. Send comments to comments@OregonExpressway.info as well as to MRA traffic chair Pam Radin (pamradin@comcast.net).
We will be distributing flyers for the meeting. If you can help distribute 200+ in your neighborhood, please let us know. Just respond to this email.

We're also still looking for more Block Preparedness Coordinators who can help our neighborhood be more prepared when an emergency or natural disaster strikes. Check out the new program which is being rolled out across the city, with the purpose of "changing the role of community members from victims to partners in disaster recovery." It has been developed by the Palo Alto Neighborhoods group in conjunction with city officials. Please note that the July 4th Chili Cookoff will have information on this program as well as other materials at the Palo Alto Police Table.

Midtown resident Geri Spieler announces publication of her new book, "Taking Aim at the President: The Remarkable Story of the Woman who shot Gerald Ford". This will be available in early 2009. We wish Geri good luck!
